I just received the following phishing email message claiming to be from the Windows Live Team. If you receive this email, do not respond to it. Just delete the message.
Some of the indicators that this email is not legitimate include:
- Email address of the sender is a plain hotmail address
- Poor grammar, capitalization, and spacing.
- Asks for too much personal information (Windows Live would not ask for your password, secret question, secret answer, and date of birth)

It really bothers me to receive this kind of e-mails.
i got one this morning- although it seems to be evolving with what is wriitten her, its now lost its secrat question line, added a we will not share your information line and now demands response within 24 hours not 2 weeks,on the further information tab it told me it was sent by wanda47@hotmail.co.uk i did search this email address but nothing came up on google ….luckily after reading it 3 times it still didnt seem right, then i found your thread, oh well better luck next time wanda…..however i will be forwarding all the scam emails i get this week to that email address….just for the fun of it of course lol

This particular spammer is called – vcisneros66@hotmail.com.
Check their emails, always turns out to be some random person. They can put any random names, hence the reason why you see them coming up as WINDOWS LIVE TEAM or something like taht.
Yearp, these people need to be SHUT DOWN.
Will it be possible for MSN to close down the accounts that are doing these things – as soon as they are detected?
Granted, they could keep making new accounts, but I suppose these douche bags are like viruses that need to be obliterated. Also, when they apply for accounts – personal info is given to MSN, right? Could that info be used to blacklist them? Then it could stop them making new ones.

It is very easy to spoof an email address and make it look like it came from a legitimate email user. That is what makes it difficult to go after these phishing schemes.

I just received a new phishing scam. Subject line says, “Update! (Final Notice)”. I see lots of people getting caught by this. Everyone need to realize that a legitimate request for information will never ask for a password. If it does, junk it!

You would think that Hotmail would email us and warn us of this phishing scam since it was supposedly using their corporation’s name.
If they had, I missed it.
I was very concerned at first my account would be canceled because I have some sentimental emails from my late Dad in my “save” file. I guess I should print them, huh?
I find it perfectly reasonable that hotmail would want to close down unused accounts so I will bet some people will imprudently comply.
I would have fallen prey had I not noticed that the return email was obviously not Hotmail and the email supposedly from hotmail itself said “you may not know this person” and hotmail blocked the graphics until I hit the “safe” button. It never does any of that with its own Spam. At least I don’t think it does….
That’s what prompted me to do a yahoo search, which led me here. Had this scammer been a little more sophisticated he might have included a link where we would plug in our passwords etc instead of including them in the body of the email — a dead give away that it is not legit.
AND I JUST SPILLED MY COFFEE!!! So I am requesting the Internet Police please add that crime to the list of charges against yee_xiong04@yahoo.com.

Pity I did not see the above a whole lot sooner, I fell for the ‘scam’ & as a result was hit by a ‘freezer virus’ (think thats what it’s called! anyway I can no longer access my original account & this is my ‘new’ one. I’ve just seen in my In Box – mail from ‘Windows Live Team…CLOSURE OF HOTMAIL ACCOUNT’!!!’ this time I’m NOT even goint to open it. I’m just passing this one to everyone here OK! You were not the only one that got a virus from there hot mail account. I have 3 accounts with msn,and someone took over one of my accounts . At first they just sent everyone on my mailing list spam. I would go on line invisible and all of a sudden I would be available. Then msn shut down my account. I tried to talk with them to find out what to do and how to stop this . I will tell you it was very very hard to find out were to send an email to the team for help. After about 3 months I got my account open up again and I changed my pass word. This helped a lot. But I keep going on line as available after I checked a couple of emails out. Then all of a sudden I couldn’t do anything with my computer . I called my internet provider and they told me I had a virus. I couldn’t do anything with my computer. So I had to reformat my computer. Which really pissed me off, I lost a lot of things I wanted to keep. Even after formatting I still go on line invisible and all of a sudden I am available. Plus I am getting many invites to be friends from girls wanting me to add them so they can get me to pay them to watch them get nude. I wonder if it is these girls that took over my email account ? Like one of the guys said before. I wished we could send these guys some kind of cyber bomb that would blow up there computers. And I really think that the live team should do something about this , also make it easier for people to contact them for help.
Well… I fell for the scam, and now all of my friends are asking me why I’m suddenly emailing them for $2800 dollars in travel fees. I’ve had that account for over 6 years and EVERYTHING is in there… ugh, what do I do????? I’m so mad at myself for falling for it and now I feel so stupid. *sigh* I wouldn’t be surprised if I woke up tomorrow and found my bank account entirely empty.

I get a laugh at the attempts these scammers make. Always their biggest hurdle has been the use of proper grammar. When I first began using a computer in the late 80′s I remember instantly becoming a problem solver. I think Windows Live are ignoring these scammers because they are simply just little bugs hardly worth the effort of stepping on.
So just as we delete other junk, be savvy and delete these scammers attempts after you’ve had a good laugh of course.

Perhaps Hotmail should check out the account addresses being used to send these phony warnings and change or cancel them since they have obviously been compromised somehow.

This is not easy to do. A spammer can send an email that looks like it comes from any address they want to use. They do not actually need to have access to the account that the email appears to be coming from.

Yes Tom that is called masking. You can do the same thing with urls. But if you really know what you are doing and have the right software, you can unmask. That is what the police do.
Robb they are probably stolen accounts already. I think that is what they do. They steal someones account and then use it to steal with. That way if someone tries to catch them ,they only get the person that got there account stolen.

I got a similar email with a strange email address. I foolishly put in the information requested and this morning my email had been hacked and someone sent emails to all of my contact list telling them I was in Spain attending to a sick cousin and needed money to pay the doctor and hospital bills in order for her life to be saved.
The email addresses used were, mchaulagai@hotmail.com and marychristian29@hotmail.com. I have changed my password and written to each of these addresses to alert them of my awareness to their scam. I also had to write an alert to my contact list so they don’t do what I did.

By the way all this information these impersonators want from you … you gave this when you first ever signed up. You have never signed in anonymous…. They ask for your date of birth at that time and your name. Also you had to set up your password within their page and you country/territory. They know if you are still using your account or not. I mean they have specialist there that have to monitor their whole company. THIS IS A SCAM!!!!

I also recieve an email this morning from HOTMAIL LIVE TEAM asking me to fill up the attached form with my username and password. They said that they will be doing their 2011 Database Update. I guess these people are really stupid and people who has an account know that what they ask is a personal information. What a stupid SCAMMERS!.
I am somewhat surprised that so many folks get “concerned” when they receive
an obvious phishing email! Maybe it’s a good thing, but it is well known by most
internet users that no legitimate email provider will EVER ask you for personal information
such as your password. If you have an account with them, they already know it!
If not, just delete the thing and forget about it!

You are right that many internet users are aware of phishing scams. However, I believe that many are not. I hope that this posting and all the comments will help those users that have trouble identifying phishing scams. Some phishing scams have become very sophisticated and difficult to identify, even for the more experienced.

I got one a few days ago and I pretty much knew it was a scam. But I always have to make sure. And thanks to your site, I can find out what I need to know.
Also, any legit email from Windows Live will never ask for your password and other info. And usually will use your email or your name.

Here is one i got today; I’ve gotten several before and thought it was spam, but i figured i should research it on the web. It always gives me a bad feeling seeing “your account will be deleted”, etc. I guess that’s how they get people to do it. But since the first one of these that i got was years ago, and my account is still active, I’m pretty sure it’s not legit

Why this is not junked by either live mail itself or MS Outlook is beyond me.
I got one too… someone should get those scam artists. Mine came from afhami8@hotmail.com. The real windows live team would never use an e-mail adress like that. I hope they catch the bastards!
