Outlook 2007 Will Not Send Email After Upgrade

Ok, folks. This is a weird one I encountered.

I recently migrated a client of mine from a computer running Windows XP/Office 2003 to a new computer running Windows Vista/Office 2007. I used the Windows Vista utility, Windows Easy Transfer to migrate the settings from the old XP computer to the new Vista computer. You do NOT want to use the File and Settings Transfer Wizard that comes with XP, as it will only transfer files and not settings.

Windows Easy Transfer worked like a charm. It transferred all of my user’s settings and files. I then installed Outlook 2007. I opened Outlook 2007 for the first time and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Windows Easy Transfer has transferred the Outlook settings. All of the user folders and archives were there. Outlook then went out and successfully downloaded new email. I was amazed at how easy this migration went. Outlook 2007 seemed to be fully functional.

Then came the phone call the next day. Although she was receiving emails (which is what I had checked), my client could not SEND any emails! (which I did not think to check!) When trying to send emails, the following error would occur: “None of the authentication methods supported by this client are supported by your server” I searched the Internet only to find very spotty coverage of this problem. What I did find was odd.

It had to do with authenticating before sending an email. In Outlook 2003, the user account did not need to authenticate to the mail server before sending. So that was the setting transferred to Outlook 2007. You would assume that the same settings that worked in Outlook 2003 would work in Outlook 2007 with the same email account and the same email provider, right? Not in this case (and evidently a few others on the Internet). I have also found variations of this problem on the Internet where the authentication had to be turned OFF in Outlook 2007 when it was ON in Outlook 2003.

Here are the steps to follow:

1. In the Outlook menu, go to TOOLS-ACCOUNT SETTINGS
2. Select the mail Account. Click on Change

3. Choose the More Settings button.

4. On the Outgoing Server tab, check the box for My Outgoing Server (SMTP) requires authentication. Also, select the Log on to incoming main server before sending mail button. Click OK

This was the only article I found so far that actually fixed the problem. I had Outlook 98 and installed Outlook 2007. It went thru just fine. I found I could receive email, but not send. I was getting the dreaded “None of the authentication methods supported by this client are supported by your server” message. I’m using pop3/SMTP to get to Millenium’s email servers. By changing from “Use same setting as my incoming mail server” to “log on to incoming mail server before sending email” on the outgoing server tab, it made it work. Note: I had several items in my Outbox. Outlook keep crashing until I restarted it and very quickly right clicked and cancelled the send/receive, then deleted the items in the Outbox.

Thank you all for the kind comments. This has proven to be my most popular posting so far.

Superb article. I spent a while trying to figure this out after my upgrade (and I’m MS certified, so have access to the MS newsgroups too!). All the settings were correct, they all worked fine in any other email client.
The fix that worked was the “Log-on to incoming mail server before sending mail”. Quite why, I don’t know - this has got to be an Outlook issue, my ISP certainly doesn’t require it.
Thanks Tom on an excellent article!

I would liketo thank you for taking the time to post a simple fix to this problem.

Really funny that such a simple change could fix this problem.

I would really like to know why this happens.. but for now I am content.

Great job.

I have been trying to have my school mail go through my outlook 2007. I set it up completely the correct way…it will only receive email but when trying to send this is the error message:

Task ‘jmeyer00@pnc.edu - Sending’ reported error (0×800CCC6E) : ‘ The server responded: 553 Your computer does not have a hostname, access blocked’

I don’t understand why? It should work, and the help desk has no clue and said play around with it. This is no help. I typed everything in just the way they said, no SSL with the correct numbers of 143 and 95.

Help!!!

I had same problem, this was the fix.

This has been bothering me for weeks and I just haven’t had time to search for an answer. Thanks for the explanation — yours was the forth link from Google I clicked that actually answered the question.

14 Lucy { 06.05.08 at 10:36 pm }

Thank you so much… changing my settings to “check incoming before sending” fixed my issue. Point to note for others… I run Vista, had no troubles swapping from XP. My issue occurred after updating to AVG 8.0 (free edition) - Don’t know why but there you go. Thank you for the great advice.

15 Pam { 06.06.08 at 8:11 pm }

Thank you so much…..worked like a charm. I changed my settings to “check incoming before sending”……that’s all it needed. Thank you for taking time to share your knowledge!

16 Chuck { 06.13.08 at 2:46 pm }

This did not work for me.

Additional Info:
1. I can send and receive with Ooutlook Express
2. If I ckick on one of the files in my out box, after the send/receive has completed, I get a message the file is in the process of being sent & I can not open it.

17 Linda { 07.17.08 at 3:11 pm }

thak you thank you thank you!!!!!! this worked like a charm!!!!!

18 Wendell { 07.24.08 at 1:06 am }

Thank you!!! I spent 2 hrs trying to fix this issue, and finally came across your article. FYI, I ran into this with a new version of Outlook 2007 on a Vista machine; it had never had a previous version of the software installed. I’m not sure if someone had inadvertently changed the settings or not, but in any event, your instructions fixed it - GREAT JOB!

19 ERP guy { 07.29.08 at 11:18 am }

This did not fix our issue. Outlook 2007 has no outgoing emails and yet…when sending..thinks there are 2 messages. We have reinstalled, started with a new pst file…still the same issue. You can check send receive on a new install…butttt.. when you receive, you cannot send, even with your fix.

20 tobi { 09.03.08 at 11:35 pm }

hi tom! i work as a technical support engineer here in the philippines for calltek international. i received a call just this morning about the same issue, i googled it but i found no specific answer for this issue until i came to your page. my guest ended the call frustrated, i called the guest back and performed these steps - and the guest was able to connect, he was so happy. i then went to share these steps to my supervisor/teamlead. I THANK YOU so much for this help. more power tom!

21 Cam { 09.13.08 at 8:29 pm }

This works fine if both the incoming and outgoing mail server are for the same provider. But, if you have a situation where the incoming server is one provider and outgoing is another entirely that does require authentication, this does not work.

22 Vicki { 09.16.08 at 10:29 pm }

Wow! Thanks… nothing else worked! That was quick and easy.

23 Lisa { 09.21.08 at 12:26 pm }

Thank you SO MUCH! I’ve been just about going insane trying every combination in those settings. I did as you said once before but had another setting in conflict. I did NOT have the error others have mentioned about not being able to remove messages in outbox, but after deleting one that never would send, I closed Outlook and reopened before trying to send again. It worked!! You are awesome!! I have spent so much time on this aggravation. Too bad MS doesn’t post and credit you at their site. You deserve the recognition. I have PeoplePC as a provider, and I call their number, but I have learned not to install their software, nor is it convenient to use their webemail interface. Using Outlook or OE is much, much faster. I am truly grateful. Lisa 9/21/2008 P.S. I need to remember to bookmark your web address, because I’ve been all over the net trying to find solutions that actually worked. :)

Dear Sir,

Have a nice day.

I migrate my data from one PC to another the old one was with XP windows as well Outlook 2003 while the new one is VISTA with Outlook 2007.Im receiving messages normally but not able to send any, is there any changes in account settings that I should change?

We checked our servers and I put the same settings on many other computers and it works normally putting in consideration that the PCs we tried are all having WINDOWS XP and OUTLOOK 2007.

Is the problem from WINDOWS VISTA?

Note: All the copies we are using are GENUIN

Thank you very much for your support & looking forward to hear from you soon.

26 Chris B { 10.20.08 at 7:18 pm }

Hi there, I found the solution for you sbcglobal.net users with Vista and Outlook 2007:

The reason the outgoing emails are not working is because the sbcglobal.net domain uses ssl authentication to verify your login. This protects your password during each authentication. Follow the steps below to make it work.

To locate and verify your email settings in Outlook 2007:

1. Click on the Tools menu in Outlook.
2. Click on Account Settings.
3. Double click on the email account that needs to be fixed.
4. Set the “Incoming mail server (POP3)” to pop.att.yahoo.com
5. Set the “Outgoing mail server (SMTP)” to smtp.att.yahoo.com
6. Set the User Name field to your full email address joe@sbcglobal.net and password.
7 Check the password checkbox to remember password.
8 Uncheck the “Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)” box.
9. Click the More Settings button.
10. Click on the Outgoing Server tab.
11. Check the box next to “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication”.
12 Select the radio button “Use same settings as my incoming mail server”.
13. Click the Advanced tab.
14. Check the “This server requires an ecrypted connection (SSL)
15. Select “SSL” from the “Use the following type of encrypted connection”.
16. Enter Incoming mail (POP3) port 995 and the Outgoing mail (SMTP) port 465.
17. Click OK.
18. Click Test Account Settings. You should now get “Congratulations! All tests completed successfully.” message
19. Click on Close.
20. Click the Next button.
21. Click the Finish button.

Chris

NICE JOB! MY ISP WAS NO HELP AT ALL AND INSISTED THAT I NEEDED TO RELOAD OUTLOOK.
YOU FIXED A VEXING PROBLEM.

29 Robert { 10.27.08 at 1:04 pm }

I don’t know how many more “attaboys” you can take, but this solved my problem in about 5 seconds. I had already paid $49 to MS as my fully licensed verion of Outlook 2007 (bought as an educator through the school board) was on a Japanese disk, so MS would NOT provide ANY free support. Then, they could NOT solve the problem. Then I went to my ISP, and they spent over two hours with me, and NOTHING - well, except that I have now lost three hours of my life and $49.00. As I was talking through all of this, I remembered a similar thing the last time I upgraded. I do not have the specifics, but I am assuming that when they went from 2000 (I think that was the year) to 2003, they changed that tab setting, and now going to 2007 - they changed it back to the other way. So possibly the only happy people are the ones who went from 2000 directly to 2007, bypassing 2003.

Anyway, Thanks a quadrillion.

34 Steve Metzler { 11.15.08 at 6:06 am }

Tom, hi,

I have Outlook 2003, which all of a sudden stopped sending e-mails for no apparent reason. While my ISP’s SMTP server required different settings than those in your article (no SPA, just had to tick the ‘Use same settings as my incoming mail server’ button), you at least put me on the right track.

In the end though, I’m not sure what happened to me. Microsoft pushed a few updates on me a few days ago, and that might have resulted in my settings being changed. I doubt if my ISP changed their authentication without telling me.

Thanks,
Steve

I tried all the suggestions and still get this message when sending an email from Outlook 2007.

“task terri- sending reported error (0×80042109): Outlook cannot connect to your outgoing (SMTP) server. If you continue to get this message contact…

Do you have any other suggestions? Thank you!

36 Alan { 11.24.08 at 3:48 pm }

I’ve been really impressed at how much this has helped people but I’m still in the same boat as I was before. I’m not sure what changed that triggered this problem but it’s really irritating. I’ve got a Yahoo email account which I am still able to access via their website, and I still receive emails automatically in Outlook. But when I try to send anything via Outlook the wonderful “80042109″ error appears. I’ve tried the suggestions that have been posted in this thread but they haven’t done the trick sadly. Any other ideas anyone?

For anyone who this solution did not work for, it may require extra steps that vary from ISP (Internet Service Provider) to ISP. All that is needed is to call you ISP talk to their Technical Support and they will be able to help you 100%, and walk you through it step by step. Like I said, it changes from ISP to ISP so you need to call yours. takes between 10-15 minutes assuming you know enough about computers to make things go smoothly for the guy on the other end, and he doesn’t have to hold your hand through every mouse click. Cheers

I have the same problem as discribed on top of the page. Microsoft Outlook 2007 receives emails, but nothink is going out. I have try all the above and still not working. My host would not help, the seetings being corect…I use XP and previous I head outlook 2003. My laptop was under wipe and evrithink is working fine but not the outlook. Any help would be very very much apreciated.

47 Lauren { 03.19.09 at 9:41 pm }

Hope you can help me too! My Outlook 2003 just quit sending today. It receives fine. ISP settings are same for send and receive. I tried reworking the settings for authentication, but nothing works. Usually, when I try to send mail, I am asked to enter my password again. Now, though, that prompt doesn’t appears. (This was BEFORE I started adjusting those authentication settings.) Any ideas are much appreciated!

48 Lauren { 03.20.09 at 11:31 am }

Hi — A networking pro suggested something, and it worked! He said that my cable provider was probably blocking the outgoing port, that I should ask my host for an alternate port. They gave me one, I changed the port — easily — by going into email account settings — and immediately, the problem was resolved. Hope this helps someone else.

49 nick m { 03.20.09 at 8:10 pm }

Reply to Outlook will not send email
Good news with my Microsoft outlook is back to business…. Email is going out 
So finally my problem is gone.
I’m not a computer expert, just I want to share with you people how and what I have done.
From the top of this page described by Tom Swanson I have done differently only on the outgoing message tab, I left everything unchecked and still email would not go out. Tom is showing to be selected…(I try that way to and no results) I’m not sure if that settings is important or not.
Remember all this time I was connected wireless.
I called again my internet provider and I told them about my problem of receiving emails but not sending. The customer support offered his help and told me to connect wired or to call the help desk of my router. To make sure I have pinpointed the problem, I try wireless again and email would not go out. I was tired and exhausted to call the help desk, but connecting back to wire email was working.
Thank you to all of you who spent the time to share solution and ideas how to fix problems.

Tom, your posting may be nearly a year and a half old, but it’s just as valuable now as it was’ the day you posted it! This problem was killing me at a brand new client, and I was certain’ that we’d lose the account because the problem was’ so visible…and’ completely intractable. Your fix absolutely saved the business for us!!

I searched for well over eight hours before I ran across your site. You can bet that from now on, I’m gonna check here first!

Hi Tom, great instructions and great pictures, however, this has not cured the problem for me. I have recently been upgraded from XP 2003 to 2007 and I now cannot send any emails, can receive them fine - I’m really stuck. Any more suggestions? Even the people who did the uprade (involving new hard drive) cannot solve this problem, I feel like I’ve been abandoned.
Any help gratefully received.

I have Outlook 2007. Last night I was e-mailing photos and go a blue screen that said something like Windows had experienced a critical error and had to close. I went into the other room and when I came back I have been able to send e-mails to anyone but myself. It shows the e-mails are going to the out box, then to the sent box but the people are not receiving my e-mails.

Does anyone have a clue how to fix this????

Almost 1.5yrs after your post, it has still helped and resolved my problem. Still not sure why it happened as all was working fine. I suspect it could possibly be some Windows Server or Exchange Server updates which i had installed.

66 Doug { 08.22.09 at 3:15 pm }

I have been googling for an answer to this issue for a week. Finally found this thread. My ISP had suggested a bunch of changes, none of which worked. Finally the “login to incoming mail server before sending email” solved it. Mine started with a MS Update. I have been running Outlook 2007 for a long time without the problem. Thanks to all. My emails no longer hang in the outbox.

71 Jai { 12.16.09 at 6:23 pm }

Just thought I would chime in after spending an entire day on this issue. MY situation turned out to be, after Road Runner tch support couldn’t fix for 3 days, that Outlook smtp port was blocked.

Its the weirdest thing. When Microsoft tech shared my PC and tried to reach the server directly using telnet on prot 25, it was refused. Yet the Vista - Windows Mail is and has been ( I never uninstalled it) operating thru that port. .

However in Outlook 20007, she changed the port to 587 and it worked fine.

Go figure.

72 Akshay Lal { 02.01.10 at 10:36 pm }

I made the change suggested by Tom but still it wasn’t working. Then I read the last post by Jai and changed the port from 25 to 587 and bingo. Outgoing emails are working like a charm. The bottleneck has disappeared. Had to make both the changes - the one suggested by Tom as well as the one suggested by Jai. I have XP and MO 2007. Thanks a lot to both.

After HOURs of time looking for solutions online, I found your page. I did what you suggested but I still cannot send or receive e-mail in Outlook 2007. I am trying to connect with my cox.net server and download my e-mail from there to OUtlook. I am wireless but my Internet connection is very strong. When I try to set up Outlook for e-mail I get an error message saying it cannot find the server. I don’t know what to do! Can you help me? Thanks!

I have been working off-site as a consultant when this issue came up. You have just saved me loads of time I could have wasted going through Internet and resending every mail.

Cheers (a lot)

Tom - hi~
I’m so very, very grateful for your article. I have been battling with this problem for weeks, and in desperation, just googled the exact wording and your article came up. Thank goodness! The problem was solved immediately, and my ‘outbox’ cleared speedily!

Thanks so much!
Helen

I had this problem for 1 1/2 weeks now and was about to go nuts over it! After calling my internet provider and others for help, I finally found help on this page - Thank you!!!
It worked fine till I changed the internet provider (ATT), not sure if it has something to do with it; I use MO 07 and use 2 different ports (one for incoming and one for outgoing mails). Checkmarking the box “Log on to incoming mail server” doesn’t help in that case, but changing the port from 25 to 586 did it. Thank’s a bunch for this article :))
